Final Tier Four

|
Final Tier Four Diesel Engine Regulations are upon us, and we passed our first tests. Last Friday,
our
Model 68C diesel engine distributor came to our shop and performed the
rigorous routine as prescribed by the EPA. It was much more detailed
and time consuming than I had envisioned.
For this long time
participant of mechanical/hydraulic machine design and user of engines,
both Gasoline and Diesel, it is sometimes hard to see the value of the
added cost. I go back to my first Caterpillar purchase, a D6-9U, S#
9U17728 with a then, relatively new, Hydraulically Controlled Bull
Dozer Blade. For its day, it was a real producer and it started with a
Pony Engine running on gasoline. Other diesel engines used a
decompression valve and started on gasoline before closing the valve
and watching it sputter to life on diesel. Some started with two (2)
very large batteries, if it wasn’t very cold. Then finally at last
resort, a spray can of either.
All displayed a very large cloud of grey/black smoke when they started. Then after going to work,
a heavy load again filled the sky with smoke. It was a badge of honor, as an operator to keep the
plume of smoke as constant as possible as it meant you were working, and the “Dirt Boss” was watching !!
Today, Diesel engines start with nearly no smoke, then run under load without smoke, quite an
Improvement, however, not without a cost penalty. I am sure that our engine distributor needs to add
the
cost of visiting all of his customers and performing the tests. The
engine manufactures need to add the cost of special technology,
hardware and software now being installed on their engines.
While we all will be paying a price, looking a the smog photos currently taken in China and India
while remembering the smog conditions in California during the ‘80s, maybe the price is worth it.
During
my long career dealing with performance associated with construction
machines, I have consistently endeavored to improve existing available
performance. My family, Iowa farmers believed strongly that our land, a
gift from God, should be left in better shape than when farming was
started.
This foundation has guided my work throughout my life time.
I was designing “Green” long before it was a common goal. Americas
Finest, “General Purpose” screening plant was not an accident. Click on
“General Purpose”
to see ten (10) reasons why. Click on Green to see about how
efficiency, equals “Green”. Please watch for future Brad’s Blogs
covering these subjects.
Orbital Action Screens use small
engines to perform an exceptional amount of work. These small engines
are partially exempt from the heavy increases in price that larger
engines have experienced.
Enjoy the results of Orbital Action, “General Purpose” Screening. It pays!
Happy
screening
