The “KISS Principal”
(Keep it Simple, Stupid)
Applied With Electronic Controls:

Final Tier Four Diesel Engine Regulations are upon us, like it or not we must deal with less horsepower while maintaining screening plant performance. If possible, we must hold our cost of goods to pre-tier four levels. Believe it or not, 5 pumps use less horsepower than 1.

As noted in Blog’s 78 & 79, we have retained our basic simple controls and hydraulic system efficiencies while adding the Remote Control ability. We say, we have five pumps, one for each hydraulic circuit. Some ask, why five when one could do it with one of the commonly used flow control valves which divide one pump flow into five flows? I will explain our rational as follows.

1.    Each of the five pumps we use are identical except for rotation.
2.    Each of the five pumps are available “Off The Shelf” from many vendors.
3.    All have identical inlet and outlet ports located the same from many vendors.
4.    All pump an equal amount of oil per revolution.
5.    All are pressure rated far above our system demands.
6.    Due to the simple design and mass production, pump costs are very competitive.
7.    All but one of our five circuits use the full flow output of the pump without flow controls.
8.    At our design operating pressure, our pumps efficiency rating is quite high.
9.    Adding electronic controls to a simple system becomes an easy task, using very simple on/off solenoid valves while retaining the reliability of the manual ball valve.

If we used a single pump and divided a single flow, into five flows, we would have several design choices to consider. However each choice would add a complexity and power consumption level we consider wasteful and unnecessary. This complexity relates to the need to add Pressure Compensated Flow Regulation to either a constant displacement pump or a variable displacement pump with either manually selected flow rates or a pressure compensated flow rate control. The good news is that there are several highly respected manufactures of such pumps and flow controls.

The sad news is, with the need to control each of five flows with different requirements, a pressure compensated control becomes necessary to bleed off some flow to achieve the flow rate and pressure needed on a given circuit. Any flow not used for doing work converts to heat which must be dealt with some way. A common solution is to add an oil cooler to dissipate the excess heat. If any oil is not used for work, it uses horse power that is wasted. Therefore the overall efficiency rating usually is lacking as compared to our five pump system.

Another issue becomes the sourcing of repair parts as each manufacturer of typical pumps or pressure compensated flow valves furnish company specific design which usually means the ports size and location may be different control location different and they usually are not available “Off The Shelf”.

Happy screening
