Continuous Change Applied: Desired Change: Mandated Change:
|
Product
Managers, Designers, Engineers and Manufactures continually face
change. All changes have some effect, positive or negative on
performance and costs. It becomes the task of each one and all
departments working as a team to accept and make change. Our goal while
meeting mandated change along with desired change is to focus on
improving our product, its performance and customer profitability with
minimal increase in cost.
Today we face an EPA Mandated Change;
Final Tier 4 Diesel engines are now being received. Along with Tier 4
engines, a reduction in horse power on the same engine block and
displacement is one issue we face. We have known for many months this
ruling would be mandated. Early planning has been successful with
several running changes made that have allowed us to maintain
performance, hold costs and become more user friendly while improving
our product offerings
Earlier we started using cog belt drive to
drive five (5) individual gear pumps. Also we started using electrical
powered solenoid valves for on/off functions. The gear pumps are highly
efficient and do not require a charge pressure to operate. A small
savings. Then the solenoid valves allowed the Remote Radio Control to
be added at minimal cost. Additionally, small design changes to the
fines conveyor reduced the power required to carry big loads. So, a
small saving at each point adds up to keeping our output very near to
pre: EPA mandated changes without going to a higher Horse Power Engine.
