The Finer Cut

The KISS Principle V
Hydraulic System

We continue our discussion about our hydraulic system components and how they are applied to our task. Our pumps, sump and system circuitry have been previously described so this week I will cover the rotating components, our pumps and motors in more detail.

The Orbital Action screening machine works and continues to work for a long time as a result of selecting quality components and then applying them is a very conservative way. Each hydraulic component manufacturer publishes a design life projection chart which offers expected operating life listed in hours when used under suggested loading parameters.

We select and use components that suggest we may expect many thousands of life hours and then apply them at less than their continuous use rating. For example, a typical variable volume pump as used on our Model 68A will have a peak pressure rating of 4000 PSI or more. It will have a continuous use rating of 3500 PSI. Our pressure relief valve settings are 2500 PSI and our normal operating pressure will be around 1500 PSI. Our hydraulic motors will fall into a similar rating and use category.

By building our Model 68A with components such as described we are able to feel very comfortable when saying you should expect many years of hydraulic system life, even if you are operating every day of the working week.

Brads Blog, “The Finer Cut”, is another of many planned. Each issue will cover a topic of interest about our machines, our industry, our customers and more. I look forward to this task and am excited about the opportunity to broaden our communications with our customers and industry. I invite you to return and visit from time to time, cruising back through issues to see what I may have been thinking of at another time.

I also invite you, our reader to contribute by offering your comments. Please send your thoughts to Brad@orbitscreens.com , by letter or fax, 563-922 9060.

Happy screening
